GREENHOUSE SEASON
Flowers are blooming at The Jungle Farm - May 7th will be our opening of our greenhouses for regular business hours. Monday to Saturday 10 am – 5 pm. Come out and explore our warm greenhouses and see what is growing in them. Some of my favorites include:
- Deck Lettuce Gardens – I have been sneaking some leaves off our lettuce plants to get the first taste of spring. These gardens are great on your deck or balcony, you will be able to harvest your own fresh lettuce for 4-6 weeks.
- Hanging flower baskets or planters – Every year we pull out our creative side and plant different combinations of flowers. Then we wait with anticipation to see what unique flower combinations emerge
- Lily pots and bulbs – In early March I plant Asiatic Lily bulbs into pots. These will start blooming at the beginning of May. Lilies have the most exotic blooms. Back by popular demand are the lily bulbs for the lilies that grow by our strawberry barn. You can chose from over 40 different colors of lily bulbs.
- Strawberry pots and plants – You can have your own Jungle Farm strawberries in a pot or in your garden. The strawberries planted in pots in March have small strawberries on them. Many people enjoy their own patch of strawberries in their yard and the strawberry roots are now ready for planting.
- Tomatoes – We have tried lots of different tomatoes over the years and have chosen plants that produce tasty tomatoes. Beefsteak, roma, yellow beefsteak, cherry, yellow cherry are some of the kinds we have growing in the greenhouse.
- Bedding plants – All the flowers in our pots and baskets are also available in 2 1/2 “ pots. They are a nice size ready to take off and grow in whatever pot or piece of ground you chose to plant them.
- Much, much more but you will have to come out and find out what else is hiding in our greenhouses.
- Be sure to bring your kids to play on our monster truck and tractor outside the greenhouse.
Outside of the greenhouse
Our preserves and frozen items are not on display in our greenhouses but are available throughout the year.
In our deep freeze will be frozen apple and saskatoon pies for you to take home and bake up a home made pie. A quicker dessert are our prebaked apple and saskatoon crisps that only need to be warmed up.
Our shelves are full of homemade locally produced preserves including our own viniagrettes, jams, jellies and pickles. This year we also have honey made by the bees who have been busy on our farm.
April 9- 10 will be our Hanging Basket planting class. This is your chance to come chose the color and types of flowers you would like in your baskets. After you plant them, we will baby sit the pots until you are ready to take them home in May.
May 7 is our spring opening for our greenhouses. There are great gifts for Mother’s day beyond the large selection of hanging baskets.
Be sure to mark these dates on your calendar. More details will be sent as we get closer to those special events.
